Video 1 published: Ionna Mureikene remembers.
Video: http://www.1917-1991.org/m/ru/video-interviews/mureikene/
Ioanna Ulinauskaite was born in Kaunas in 1928.
After the incorporation/annexation of Lithuania by the Soviet Union in 1940, mass arrests began. Ioanna's father, Kasimiras Ulinauskaitis, was also arrested and served his sentence in the Arctic forced labour camps of Vorkuta. His family was never made aware of his fate.
In 1944, after the Red Army invasion, Ionna supported the anti-Soviet resistance, was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in "Corrective Labour Camps". She served her prison term in the Republic of Komi, in Taishet (Siberia) and in Norilsk (Krasnoiarsk krai).
She was an active participant in the camp’s revolt in Norilsk. In October 1956 the verdict of Ionna Ulinauskaites was revised. Since at the time of her arrest she was still underage, she was discharged and returned to Lithuania.
She studied medical science and became a pediatrician.
Married since 1959, two children.

About our project "The Last Witnesses"
MEMORIAL International conducts video interviews with victims and witnesses of the Soviet totalitarian era in order to preserve their memories for an interested public audience and for the use by experts.
These memories belong to the most important sources of information which still exist today about everyday life of GULAG prisoners and about living and surviving in a totalitarian state.
Our primary objective is to collect and preserve evidence while witnesses are still alive. So far, very few of such conversations with Russian witnesses have been recorded on film.
MEMORIAL is urgently dependent on funding in order to be able to continue the project and to extend it if possible. For donations to the project, please refer to our bank account details below:
